• Registration
Registration with us means that you are on our database and we will get in touch with you when we get an assignment where your profile fits. We will get in touch with you by phone or by email or either specifically or generally through our Thursday IND~EX email. Please keep looking at our “Selected Assignments” web page. Please also keep us up to date with your availability and send us – through our web site - a new updated CV from time to time when circumstances require it. We think that about every six months is about right.
• The Interim Management Association
The Interim Management Association is our professional body and we are an enthusiastic supporter. Charles Russam founded it in 1987 and was its Vice Chairman for the first eight years, and, now, Jason Atkinson is Vice Chairman. Paradoxically, we encourage all who approach us to spend some time on their website, identifying other Providers with whom you should register.
• There are about fifteen Russam GMS Principals
There are about fifteen Russam GMS Principals around the UK and our profiles and contact details are on our web site. Please do call any of us if you wish. We often suggest deferring a formal meeting until we are working on a specific assignment that seems to match your profile but we have tried to build into the Russam GMS web site as many answers to the questions you are likely to ask. We take the view that our website offers more information and guidance to current and aspiring Interim Managers than any other website. If you have any queries do call us - we are constantly on the move or on the telephone so apologies if we are a bit difficult to track down.
• We carry out regular Market Research Surveys
We carry out regular Market Research Surveys. In particular, our “Snapshot” Survey, which we conduct electronically every six months, is very much an important industry barometer. Please do support it! The more responses we get the more reliable and more important it will become. We are told continuously how helpful this information is for Interims seeking to develop their Practices. Past Research exercises can be found on our web site
• We organise functions and Events
We organise functions and Events for those registered with us mostly in London but increasingly around the country and where we are confident of getting a good crowd together. From your point of view, the more executives attending, the better the networking. These will be announced when appropriate and we always try to give as much notice as possible. Mostly, these are part of a specific ongoing series but we do arrange many one-offs where we have identified a demand or an opportunity arises. We see limited value in competing with CPD course organisers unless we think it important and we are able to do it at a much lower price.
• Mentoring
Do you need support from an IW Mentor in 2010? Interim Women, www.interimwomen.co.uk the UK business forum set up by Russam GMS, which supports women working as Interims Managers is enhancing its ‘IW Mentor’ scheme to support all new Interim Managers in 2010. We all know that becoming an Interim Manager is a big step and that it can be made much less daunting by getting good advice from an experienced Interim Manager on the ‘dos and don’ts’ of starting out and building a successful career. To be an IW Mentor We are looking for experienced Interims who would be willing to become IW Mentors and give up a little time to advise a new Interim Manager – find more details here. To request a IW Mentor If you are a new interim looking for career advice - from tips on getting started, to advice on networking, setting up as a limited company and how to win your first assignment, then you can apply for the IW Mentor scheme by emailing us directly at: iwmentor@interimwomen.com or going through our website www.interimwomen.com. – find full details here.
• Summer Congress
At the end of June we hold our annual “Summer Congress” usually at Regents College in London. This is carefully designed around the key issues in what makes an Interim Manager successful. We usually finish up turning people away! (Health & Safety!)
• Early evening Supper Events
We hold early evening Supper Events for actual and aspiring Non-Executive Directors. We co-host these with headhunters, Clive & Stokes and career Counselling specialists, Fairplace. Read about our NEDgroups on our Non-Executive Directors webpages.
• Not for Profit and Charity Sectors
We host special seminars for Interims operating in the Not for Profit and Charity Sectors.
We also host a number of Events under our www.InterimWomen.com initiative. More information on their website.
• Professional Indemnity & Other Insurance
Professional Indemnity & Other Insurance. We recommended the IMA sponsored products. We do not always require PI cover for our Interim Managers on Russam GMS assignments but you should seriously consider it. See separate Section.
• Limited companies
Limited companies. We require you to trade through a limited company for Russam GMS assignments please. We used to suggest some suppliers but, more recently, have taken the view that an internet search would work just as well.
• Psychometrics
Many newcomers to Interim Management say that they would like to get a better understanding of themselves, their skillsets, aptitudes and suitability for Interim Management. Sometimes this is part of our selection process but it is also on offer as a one-off. We have an arrangement with Thomas International to make their PPA online product available to you. See separate Section. You will have to pay something for it but we do have scores of satisfied customers.
• Training & Practice Development
Training & Practice Development. Over the nearly thirty years that we have been in business, we have noticed very clearly the burgeoning importance of “training” – taken as a generic word to cover all aspects of professional and technical development. It is very clear that those Interims that do best are the ones that treat CPD as very important – those who don’t fare less well in this highly competitive market. . We organise Courses, Seminars, Conferences, etc., and tend to focus on those areas that are not more easily covered by commercially available offerings. Of course, we recommend the IM Institute one day Programme - details available from the IMA website – www.interimmanagement.uk.com.
• Entrepreneur
You will probably have already visited our “Entrepreneur” web pages – if not, perhaps you should! This is a support to our core Interim Management business. It is not a new business or a diversification. It recognises that senior people like you have broader horizons than just Interim Management; that you have a range of contacts and some level of entrepreneurial aspiration or opportunity, either for yourself, your clients or others you meet in your daily life. The “Russam Business Network” webpage is aimed at you! And so is the “Business Opportunities” webpage. Subject to our editorial control, you can have personal access to this web page. This is an electronic notice board. Russam GMS is not FSA registered and we do not offer investment advice.
• The Russam GMS Business Introduction Scheme
Part of this same philosophy is our enthusiasm to share in the business opportunities that come your way, if you would like us to. The Russam GMS Business Introduction Scheme pays you 50% of our gross margin up to £1,000 if you introduce an Interim Management opportunity that turns into a job for us. If the introduction is clearly of a substantive nature we will come to a different arrangement and will generously share the profit with you. Much depends, of course, on the nature of the assignment and there are clearly some instances that represent some conflict of interest but please do talk with any of us at any time. We pay for introductions that lead to a meeting and we pay for introductions that turn into assignments.
• Other business or entrepreneurial ideas
We would also be very interested to hear about any other business or entrepreneurial ideas that you might have from time to time. We might be able to help or point you in other directions. We do see ourselves as an outward facing company. We always have some projects on the go but, as a small company ourselves, need to balance this with our core activities. We recognise that we need to make it worth your while but we like to think that arrangements of this type nicely reflect the Associate Programme philosophy.
• Defining your 'product' • Getting the work • Being good at what you do
• Business planning & Strategy • Marketing • Selling • Accounting and Financial and Personal Financial Management • IT • HR & legislation • Operations
Here is some market information:-
Trends
As for Sales, Networking works best | • Constantly looking outwards for opportunities. • Making new contacts all the time and exploring how mutual benefits might be created. • Continuously learning new things about your own professional 'product', relearning things you know already and practising what you do know. (If you think you know enough, it's time to pack it in!). • Regularly find out what people really think about you! Are you likeable? Do you look good? Do you listen? Are you really good at what you do? If you're barking up the wrong professional tree or clinging to the wrong professional wreckage, how would you find out? Do you need to change and can you change? • Developing some support activities that you can work with during downtimes (Eg: selling software, writing a book, articles, etc., lecturing, Charity work, M&A fringe work, etc.) • Keeping a balance in your life. If running your own serious small business becomes an all-consuming obsession (particularly if you are not making enough money) and you have no time for anything else, your performance will deteriorate. |
• If you can identify business opportunities or looking for a business partner or to create a team or to fill out a management team, etc., let's see what our extensive network can come up with! ![]() |
